About This Report

Responsible Canadian Energy is an association-wide performance reporting program based on data reported by the CAPP membership, annual measurement and analysis of this data, as well as tools and resources for CAPP members to support continual performance improvement. The program is designed to track progress in the areas of environmental, health, safety and social performance. The program builds on nearly a decade of achievements through our Stewardship initiative, addressing key areas for performance improvement, with a renewed focus on transparency in how we assess and communicate our performance.

Central to the program is the Responsible Canadian Energy progress report.

This is the second Responsible Canadian Energy progress report, based on 2010 performance data. It provides data, trends and performance analysis, including descriptions of the significance and relevance of the program’s key performance indicators that we have chosen to monitor. The report aims to put performance data into context to support an understanding of what the numbers are telling us and where we need to improve. As an association-wide performance reporting program, data collected through the Responsible Canadian Energy program does not represent the entire upstream oil and gas industry, and as such, may not align with other reports accounting for the total industry. For some key performance indicators, data provided by CAPP members has been augmented by publicly available data from governments and regulators. We will continue to take this approach, in an effort to provide as complete a picture of industry performance as possible.

New to this year’s report is the addition of a specially designed micro-site. This website will allow people to dig deeper into the data used to compile the Responsible Canadian Energy Progress Report. It also includes a news section, where CAPP can update readers on any industry news pertaining to the Responsible Canadian Energy program, and it includes a dialogue section that will allow readers to provide feedback on the program, the report and industry’s overall progress.

Development of the Responsible Canadian Energy program is ongoing. There are areas where we are currently not adequately measuring industry performance, or where our performance indicators could be enhanced. Through continuous improvement, we will ensure the program, and this report by extension, responds to the range of issues that matter to our stakeholders. Future reports will include additional metrics and enhancements in reporting, including supporting analysis and interpretations. We are also providing tools and resources to assist our members in fully implementing the Responsible Canadian Energy program.
