Introduction

Shale Gas and the Responsible
Canadian Energy Program

One of the fundamentals the Responsible Canadian Energy Report is built upon is the measurement, reporting, and analysis of data surrounding the oil and gas industry’s operations. The metrics that go into the collection of data are, for the most part, well-established and based on industry’s prior practices over decades of exploration and production. Performance measurement for shale gas requires some modifications to these established metrics and the industry needs to move to consistent reporting of data specific to shale gas activity. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP), along with our member companies, is working on creating measurement and reporting systems and adapting metrics that will be indicative of shale gas performance. This information is not available for 2010.

This section of the report is therefore intended to provide background information on shale gas – what shale gas is, how it is recovered and some of the social and environmental challenges associated with shale gas activity, along with actions being taken by industry to address these issues.

CAPP invites you to learn more about shale gas development during this reporting period at www.capp.ca/rce.
